Bike repair and refurbishment – second hand bikes – abandoned and unwanted bikes

There are two charitable organizations local to Barking that train people to repair/restore bikes, Recycles Ilford and Respoke’s Becontree Cycle Centre. As a result they have refurbished bikes available for sale and/or part exchange. They also accept donated bikes if they are suitable for the project and if space is available.

They can also carry out repairs to your bike, subject to availability.

If you have an unwanted bike, please don’t let it gather dust/rust. Post it on Freegle or Freecycle (or Ebay), or donate it to one of these charities.

If you know of an abandoned bike, please report it on fixmystreet.com. We are making the effort to reclaim such bikes for repair/restoration or breaking for spares.

In 2016 it was announced that the Richard House Charity shop in Faircross, Barking, would be selling bikes that have been refurbished by a social enterprise.

Becontree Cycle Centre is at 3 Rugby Road, DAGENHAM, RM9 4AL, which is very near Becontree Station on LUL’s District Line * (come out of the station and turn left, and where the bridge lands, Rugby Road is on the left. (020) 8593 1677 / info@respoke.org.uk.

* one of the subsurface lines of London Underground – though here it is over ground – on which even non-folding bikes may be taken (though not at peak times). The others are the Circle, Hammersmith-and-City and Metropolitan lines.

BCC is a re-incarnation of Gascoigne Cycle Centre, which had to decamp from St Mary’s Parade owing to the redevelopment of The Gascoigne Estate. Their shop in Becontree is smarter in appearance, but rather smaller, and I daresay they’d be grateful to sell their bikes for space alone.

Google Street View used to discover ‘lost’ cycle ways

A vast network of forgotten cycle ways across the UK has been rediscovered with the help of Google Street View.
